March 12, 2018
Prof. Dr. Andreas Brune, Head of the Department-Independent Research Group "Insect Gut Microbiology and Symbiosis" at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and honorary professor at the Philipp-Universität Marburg, is one of two German scientists elected into the American Academy of Microbiology in 2018. He studies the role of the termite gut microbiota in the symbiotic digestion of wood and humus, focusing on the biology of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic symbionts and their interactions, the structure and functions of the intestinal ecosystem, and the evolution of its microbiota.

The AAM is the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the world's oldest and largest life science organization. Fellows are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-review process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. There are currently over 2,400 Fellows representing all subspecialties of the microbial sciences – of the 50 Fellows from Germany, five are in Marburg.
