Ploidy in prokaryotes: On the seldom cases of monoploidy and the many evolutionary advantages of polyploidy

For many years it was thought that prokaryotes typically contain one copy of the chromosome and are thus monoploid. However, recent results have revealed that the majority of species in diverse phylogenetic groups of prokaryotes are oligoploid or polyploid. Examples of monoploid, oligoploid, polyploid, and hyperpolyploid species will be given. Various evolutionary advantages for polyploidy of prokaryotes will be discussed and experimental evidence will be presented. The application of Haloarchaeal Artificial Chromosomes for the analysis of the regulation of replicon copy numbers in the model species Haloferax volcanii will be introduced. Last, but not least the implications of polyploidy in natural populations for the analyses of community structures and microbiomes will be discussed.
