Gram-positive bacteria communicate via secreted peptides, so called sex pheromones. An important example of this are the enterococcal sex pheromones, where the expression of secretion systems and subsequently DNA transfer between bacteria is controlled by intracellular signalling peptides. I will describe the genetical and structural basis of the systems that regulate the conjugative enterococcal plasmid pCF10, and will also briefly discuss the conjugative protein machinery controlled by the system.
