Biological or clinical phenotypes arise from the biochemical state of a cell or tissue which, in turn, is the result of the composition of biomolecules and their organization in the cell. Among the different types of biomolecules proteins are thought to be particularly informative of the biochemical state.
We define the proteotype as the composition and modular organization of the proteome in a particular cellular instance. In the presentation we will discuss mass spectrometry based methods to measure the proteotype composition at high throughput, reproducibility and accuracy. We will also discuss emerging methods to probe the organization of the proteotype in protein complexes and to quantify organizational changes between cellular states. Selected examples will be used to illustrate the general concepts.
