Book a Scientist! Nicole Paczia and David Adam
Don`t worry, be HAPPY: Yeasts as producers, from microbes to the study of ageing, and more
Everyone knows brewer's yeast. Besides beer and bread, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is also used for the production of many other products, from flavors and sweeteners to pharmaceuticals and even biofuel. This requires fit and young brewer's yeast cells! However, in addition to the economic aspects, knowing the age of yeast cells is an important feature in the study of ageing itself. Core Facility leader Dr. Nicole Paczia and her MPI colleague Dr. David Adam can determine yeast cell age with their HAPPY microfluidic method. The project received numerous start-up awards and shows how basic research can lead to exciting applications.
