Dr. Simone Giaveri

Biography
Dr. Simone Giaveri, originally from Pavia (Italy), is a materials scientist working at the interface between bio-inspired materials, cell-free synthetic biology, and bottom-up synthetic metabolism.
He received his MSc degree in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology cum laude at Politecnico di Milano (Polimi, Italy) in 2015.
In 2016 he joined the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) to carry out a PhD at the interface between materials science, and synthetic biology.
In his doctoral studies he contributed to the early development of a new vision about recycling of plastics, inspired by nature, under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Stellacci, and Prof. Sebastian J. Maerkl. This study demonstrates, as a proof-of-concept, that it is possible to envision a circular-economy model for polymers, where materials are transformed into new materials, not necessarily related to the parent ones.
After defending his thesis in 2021, he joined the Department of Biochemistry and Synthetic Metabolism at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology (MPI-Marburg, Germany) where he is currently working with Prof. Tobias J. Erb to develop a self-regenerating metabolic and genetic linked in vitro network.
For this work, he was awarded the EMBO Postdoctoral
Fellowship in 2022.
