Rooting cellular radiations is a major challenge in phylogenetics, and the greatest uncertainty relates to the deepest branches of the tree of life – which are critical to understanding the origins of modern biodiversity. In this talk, I will present some recently published and new work on bacterial phylogeny, the earliest stages of bacterial evolution, and the nature of the last bacterial common ancestor. I’ll also discuss new methods that might help to reconstruct the deepest branches of the tree of life, and some of the prospects for future work in the field.
