Book a Scientist: Dr. Martina Preiner

What is life? What can we learn from deep-sea rocks? and more

In our earth's beginning there were ... many stones. The first life emerged 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. How could life develop from the non-living environment? So what actually is life? We don't have any fossils from this time. But there is LUCA. Can microbes tell us anything about the beginning of life? To find answers to these questions, Dr. Martina Preiner and her team reconstruct a prebiotic environment in order to experimentally understand the pathways of the first life.
