Over the past two decades, the new field of microbial endocrinology has been increasing with new discoveries that highlight the role of the host-microbiome interactions in critical processes. The current study starts to unravel the chemotactic responses of a model commensal bacterium Escherichia coli to compounds present in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as to investigate the effects of these substances on the physiology of bacteria.
