Bacteria may be small, but they are extremely powerful. Without the things they produce, our lives would be very different. Antibiotics such as penicillin, anti-cancer medications, drugs for organ transplants - many of these drugs are produced by bacteria and often only minimally modified by chemists in the lab. Helge Bode, director at the MPI Marburg, is studying the tricks of bacteria and using their microbial construction kits to find new antibiotics even faster - or even to create new antibiotics.
