Postdoc and Ph.D. opportunities

The lab focuses on understanding bacterial multicellular behavior, using biofilms, swarming, and the interactions with mammalian hosts as a model systems. If you are interested in a postdoc in molecular microbiology or biophysics, then get in contact with us!

How to become a Ph.D. student in the lab

There are two different administrative routes to becoming a Ph.D. student in the lab.

Track 1: You apply to our lab directly. This way you can do a Ph.D. in physics or a Ph.D. in biology. Applications can be received at any time, and students can be admitted throughout the year. Open positions for such direct applications are listed in the left column of this page.

Track 2: You apply to the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) in Marburg, which is a graduate school focused on microbiology. The application deadlines are every year in January. Once admitted, the students start their research in October of the year they applied. The IMPRS yields a Ph.D. in biology.

Bachelor and Master students

We have a range of interesting projects for Bachelor and Master students in physics, biology, engineering, and computer science. The projects will focus on understanding bacterial biofilm formation and interfering with biofilm formation.

If you are interested in working in the lab send Knut an e-mail at k.drescher [at]! Alternatively, just drop by Knut's office to have a chat.
