It is well known that ionic strength can affect protein activities, especially K+, Na+ and NH4+, and cellular ionic strength of each ions is variable depending on cell states. While how changes in cellular ionic strength of each ions affects in vivo protein activities is not clear. By analysis the activity of cAMP receptor protein (CRP) in E. coli, which is a transcription factor regulating 500 genes, we found the activity of CRP is regulated by cellular cations, mainly K+.
