The Brucella abortus pathogen belongs to the Rhizobiales, bacteria that display unipolar growth. We monitored growth of the bacterial envelope and we identified where lipopolysaccharide and peptidoglycan are inserted. We also followed initial growth of Brucella in different infection models and found that growth is strictly controlled. Growth arrest is also characterized by the absence of detectable DNA replication. Intrigued by this observation, we investigated the importance of DNA alkylation repair in culture and in infection.
